Anderson House

Experience the history and splendor of Gilded Age Washington. This 1905 Beaux Arts mansion was the home of American diplomat Larz Anderson and his wife and is now the headquarters of The Society of the Cincinnati, founded in 1783 to preserve the memory of the American Revolution. Step back in time to Federal America, circa 1800, at historic Dumbarton House, an elegant museum that once hosted first lady Dolley Madison. Now celebrating fashion history with an exhibition of clothing and accessories from 1775-1825, join fellow museum walkers of all ages for “Costume Family Days.” Enjoy a self-guided museum tour and costumed-themed activities such as block printing and turban-making. Picnic in the lovely north garden to lively period music (12-2pm). Sunday only, meet stylish “Dolley”—the fashion icon of her day—in person! GFWC is an international women's organization dedicated to community improvement through volunteer service. A National Historic Landmark, GFWC Headquarters was built in 1875 and purchased by GFWC in 1922. Current exhibits highlight GFWC’s collection of fine regional art, color woodblock prints, unique arts and crafts, panoramic photographs, and GFWC memorabilia.
