Established
in 1973, Fondo del Sol Visual Arts Center is a bilingual community
museum directed by artists
and community members dedicated to presenting, promoting and preserving
the cultural heritage and arts of the Americas. The center
offers changing exhibitions of the works of contemporary artists
and craftsmen. Additionally, the center exhibits portions
of the permanent collection of pre-Colombian art, Santos (carved,
wooden saints), folk and contemporary art.
Fondo
del Sol sponsors a number of concerts, lectures, poetry reading,
performance art programs, exhibit tours and educational programs
throughout the year. The annual Caribbeana Festival features
Caribbean art and culture, video and performances of salsa and
reggae music. Unique to the nation's capital, the activities
of the Fondo del Sol Visual Arts Center promote a greater appreciation
of the Worlds rich multi-cultural heritage.
